It’s a festive kind of train ride: The 1880 Train’s Wine Express Into the West, that is. The Black Hills Central Railroad will host the 9th annual Wine Express on September 14 at 1:30 pm and 5 pm, as well as September 21 at 5 pm. The special train ride will feature a four-course meal and local wines by Prairie Berry Winery throughout the trip. Here’s the menu to whet your appetite:
- Course 1: South Dakota Dimock cheeses: Aged Cheddar and Colby South Dakota Dimock Cheeses and crackers paired with Uncle Ralph’s Rhubarb
- Course 2: Pesto Pasta Salad: Farfalle pesto pasta salad with roasted tomatoes and parmesan paired with Pink Slip
- Course 3: Chicken Caesar Sandwich and chips: Sliced chicken breast, crisp romaine lettuce and shaved parmesan on a roll served with house-made Caesar dressing and chips paired with Phat Hogg White
- Course 4: Gourmet cookie paired with a Calamity Jane Lemonade
Yum!
To add to the fun, passengers are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite Old West attire for a costume contest. There’s an incentive– Prizes will be awarded. Since the prizes could be fabulous, I say, put on that cowboy hat, chaps and/or feather boa and take a chance!
Over the last decade, Prairie Berry Winery and the 1880 Train have partnered together for this event. “It’s a fun evening that 800 to 900 people enjoy each year. It promotes both our businesses and showcases Hill City as a place offering unique events to the area,” says Black Hills Central Railroad President Meg Warder.
Many passengers agree with Meg, as one satisfied visitor described, “My husband, daughter and I had a delightful experience. The camaraderie, food, scenery, friendly service (a lot of people were served with no mess) were excellent. The weather couldn’t have been better. One of my best memories ever. We hope to join you again next fall.”
Hope you plan on joining us too! Ticket price of $64 includes food, wine, train ride, a keepsake wine glass and entertainment. A designated driver ticket is also available for $59 and includes a non-alcoholic drink instead. The train departs from the Hill City station and takes approximately two hours. Must be 21 to participate.
Tickets may be purchased online at www.1880train.com or by calling 605-574-2222. Special events, like the upcoming Oktoberfest on September 28, are ongoing. Check our website for updates.
